Categorization by Technique & Style (Backgrounds)

This is how most collectors browse, as the color of a Thangka often dictates the “vibe” of the room.

  • Full Color (Tsogli): The most common style. It features a lush, multi-colored landscape with vibrant mineral pigments.
    • Best for: Beginners and home decor.
  • Gold Background (Serthang): An opulent style where the entire background is painted with gold leaf/dust, and details are etched in red or black. Historically used for revered Buddhas.
    • Best for: High-end collectors and altars.
  • Black Background (Nagthang): A powerful and dramatic style. Gold lines are used on a black base. This is traditionally used for “Protector” deities or wrathful figures to represent their ability to destroy ignorance.
    • Best for: Bold decor and meditation on transformation.
  • Red Background (Marthang): A rare and stunning style using cinnabar or coral red. It represents power, desire, and energy.
    • Best for: Special meditation practices and vibrant focal points.
